Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have any riding or horse experience?
No! All abilities are welcome to join, including beginners and those with no previous horse experience. You will be placed in division according to your skill level and, if you chose to compete, will ride against those who are at the same level as you. Divisions are decided by team captains after evaluations are complete.
Do I need to own my own horse?
No. Personally owned horses cannot be ridden in IHSA shows, but if you do own a horse, there are many boarding stables in the Bloomington area where you can keep him or her with you while at school.
What kind of clothes are needed to show?
For Western, you will need a hat or helmet, show shirt or blouse, high-waisted riding jeans or show pants, chaps, boots, hairnet, and a belt.
If you don't have these items, don't let it keep you from showing! The team own some of these items that members can borrow and many of our members share show attire with others.
How much of my time will I have to give to the team?
As much or as little as you want! If you show, however, you should plan on at least one hour of practice time in a lesson the week before each show. None of our activities are required with the exception of meetings where we collect dues, etc. Remember: what you put into it is what you will get out!
Can I show English and Western?
You can easily be on both the Western and the English teams, if you would like! Just let us know at [email protected] or simply check out the English team as well at iuequestrian.weebly.com/
What is the Cost?
Dues differ from semester to semester. What you're paying for is mainly lessons and use of the barn and supplies. There are extra fees owed to IHSA in order to compete in shows. We offer a wide range of options for payments to the club. Please contact us for a more detailed explanation of the cost at [email protected]
